A warm hello with Al Adolph, who is on the Board of Directors of The Monterey Jazz Festival since 1983 ~ Here he is introducing the student outreach program. Starting with what is dearest to my heart, of course, Vocal Jazz Ensembles! |
|---|

What is evident is the very skillful voicing of the parts and very interesting tweaking of stock arrangements ~ The Folsom High School Jazz Choir 1 Directed by Curtis Gaesser. These ladies and gents nailed it! |
|---|

Great to hear that audience respond with such ppreciation.Next up; The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts Vocal Jazz Ensemble, |
|---|

with Director Pat Bass, wowed the audience with several superb songs and overall, I was particularly aware of the great balance of voices maintained with the disparity of male to female singers. A terriffic success!
Followed by The Duala Malambo Project with Richard Bona and Raul Midon
"I could go all night with their praises. The thought that came to me was
'amazing symbiosis',
which is what I wrote on the card I sent backstage. |
|---|

Raul and Richard are like twin brothers of different mothers. |

Git yer giddyup right here!
I caught up with a buddy from L.A. Bruce Foreman & Company, who was eager to spread the "Cow Bop" genre complete with a unique sales pitch ~ A thumbnail drive chock full of songs from his play list, fixed together with a convenient beer can opener!!! Keep your two favorites close, and start singing along, cause this band knows the meaning of fun!
That Phil Salazar ~ whew! The closest thing to Jimi Hendrix via fiddle. Next year I hope to visit with ~ Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, Bruce Forman, & Vince Mendoza
Closing out the incredible weekend with the sounds of Vince Mendoza's Still Miles Ahead Orchestra, filling the air around the main stage, too exhausted to stay around for Sonny Rollins, (I'd rather catch him at a more intimate venue).
With a slight tinge of regret at not having been here Friday night for Hiromi Uehara and her other-worldly keyboard chops, but had to stay home to hear a rare performance of Big Band legend, Bill Holman at Vitello's that night - an easy trade off, I was floating until I got on the train Saturday!!!
Between that event and The 54thMonterey Jazz Festival 2011, I had the pleasure of offstage conversations with many musician pals, including Pete Christlieb, Billy Kerr, Carl Saunders, Bruce Forman, Gary Foster, and Gene Cipriano.
The end of a great weekend, and the beginning of a personal mission, could be...Maybe!
